When I started seriously considering homeschooling many years ago, I had many things to be excited about. I couldn’t wait to set up the homeschool space, prepare the curriculum and plan the field trips. I was thrilled that I didn’t have to deal with the anxiety of dropping off my (seemingly) tiny babies to strangers I don’t know enough to truly trust with the immense responsibility. And I couldn’t wait to learn alongside my little ones – bring on the magnifying glasses and the hiking shoes. But the one thing I felt like I was sure to miss was the school supply haul at the end of the summer.
Having gone through the public school system myself, I fondly remember the back-to-school sales where I bought new binders, pencil cases and stationary. I even remember the smells associated with all the treasure that lay before me, promising some great art and doodles in the upcoming school year. Now that I’ve chosen to homeschool my kids, there will be no need for any of that, right? Great news… wrong! Very wrong!
I have now come to realize that the back-to-school supply haul for homeschoolers is even more fun than that of those that don’t homeschool. Over the years that I’ve homeschooled my 6 children, we’ve gone through years of mostly littles (think crayons, safety scissors, and for some reason tons and tons of tape) and then years of mixed aged children (think notebooks, fine tip pens, and still unreasonable amounts of tape).
I want to share with you some supply lists that I’ve compiled over the years after realizing their importance and usefulness in our homeschool. These affiliate links will help you find the supplies I’m talking about and, if you use them to make a purchase, I get a commission at no cost to you.
Go ahead! Jazz it up! Make the homeschool prep super fun for yourself and for your kids. My kids love picking out some notebooks and pencil cases before the start of each new year. We also have a little tradition where I leave a loot bag and a pencil case filled with all kinds of fun school stationary at their spot on our school table on the first day of school. It makes for sweet memories and a lot of happy giggles. And what could be better on the first day of homeschool than that?
